Radio Syd was founded by Britt Wadner, a Swedish broadcasting pioneer known as 'the pirate queen'. After being prohibited from broadcasting in Europe, Wadner sailed the boat 'Cheeta 11' to the Gambian coast, where she obtained a transmission license in 1970. The station broadcast to The Gambia and Senegal for over 30 years, becoming a landmark of African broadcasting history. Its antenna collapsed in September 2002, ending its transmission. The building housing the station was destroyed by fire in January 2020.
