GAMBIA
Although the state owns or controls the main media outlets in the country, there are some private newspapers and radio stations. Additionally, a large number of independent news websites and blogs exist, mostly based abroad and run by Gambian expatriates. In 2015, nearly one in five Gambians had access to the Internet. In 2001, only one private radio station regularly broadcasted its own news programs in Gambia. Other than that, private radio stations broadcasted news and programs produced by the only state-owned radio station, Radio Gambia. The government runs the only national television service in Gambia. The programs of this channel cover approximately 60% of the Gambian territory and reach those living in the eastern part of the country. Access to the internet is readily available in Gambia and is not restricted by the government. Cybercafes and private internet accounts make internet access affordable for many residents. |
