MAURITANIA

In Mauritania, printed media includes independent publications in addition to those controlled by the state, but as in many African countries, radio remains the main source of information for the population. There are five independent radio stations and five television channels in the country. The internet has a penetration rate of over 15%, which has allowed for growth in online media. Radio is the most popular medium in Mauritania, with Radio Nationale Radio Mauritanie dominating the sector with 42% of the audience. Print newspapers, mainly privately-owned and in French, are in decline, but some private media outlets have managed to consolidate their position over the past 15 years, such as Alakhbar.info, a general investigative media outlet, Cridem.org, Saharamedias.net, and El Mourabiton TV, a television channel broadcasting in five languages. Additionally, several information platforms have emerged and are highly active on social media, such as Tawatur.net, Bellewarmedia, and La Vision.
