TOGO

Despite its small size, Togo has a significant number of publications, with around thirty private newspapers, 85 private radio stations, and 11 television channels operating in the country. Although there are many private media outlets, public media remains the most important in the country. About 15% of the population has access to the Internet, but access remains limited due to poverty and inadequate infrastructure.

Private press existed in Togo before independence and contributed significantly to the decolonization process. It fueled the country's political and union life at the time.

In the 90s, private press reappeared in Togo with only four weeklies and monthlies to reach 77 publications today. Most of these newspapers are concentrated in the capital, and some are not even distributed within the country. In fact, only 1/6 of the publications, printed in 2000 to 3000 copies, are intended for the interior regions.

The newspapers adhere to standards and are often in color. The current trend is for sports-oriented newspapers that solely cover sports.
